The piece is called "Preaching Redemption2," and is part of a series of small, multi-drawer cases using reclaimed wood. The case is made from a discarded pulpit from a local church. The church decided it wanted to do something different, that didn't include the traditional pulpit, so it was removed and slated for curbside pickup.
The pulpit was well cared for, and in excellent condition. It yielded enough wood for several projects. The featured wood was solid red oak and oak laminate. The techniques used in this work include natural ebonizing staining and shellac finish. The drawers are lined with cork. As this transformation uses church furniture, a theological approach may harken to the notion that God takes old things and makes them new; and creation is continued in humanity. With those thoughts in mind, finding a new purpose for an old thing felt like the most responsible thing to do. This transformed pulpit now preaches a new sermon about redemption and renewal. |
